NIE Library has a rich collection of latest books, journals and other documents in various fields of epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, diseases, clinical trials, social science, demography, computers and other related areas. The collection is completely computerized and digitalized.

Library is one of the major support services of NIE research and training activities. Our library caters to the information needs of over 300 members comprising staff, Scholars of the ICMR School of Public Health pursuing Masters in Public Health (MPH), HIV Epidemiology Training Programme (HETP), National and International trainees and visitors, Ph.D fellows, NIE faculty members who are designated guides for the PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics and social sciences affiliated to University of Madras /The Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences & Technology (SCTIMST), Thiruvananthapuram, NIE is involved in several nationally important short-term training activities. The participants in these training activities utilize the library resources for the academic exercises. NIE caters to the need of many medical colleges, research institutes, government and non-governmental agencies and independent researchers in the city of Chennai, Further, it is being used by institutes which have a Memorandum of Understanding with the NIE. It enjoys popularity among ICMR institutes spread all over India. The library is the hub for information needs of scholars of academic programmes conducted at NIE.

Books: Library is well stocked with total collection of 10564 books on epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, diseases, clinical trials, social science, demography, computers and other related fields. All the books are classified according to the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) scheme of Library Classification. Annually about 1900 reference books are being added to the library collection.

Journals: Subscription is made for 100 International / 10 National journals on epidemiology, biostatistics, demography, public health and clinical trials. The library also receives 30 periodicals on gratis. Several international journals including Annual review of nutrition, Annual review of microbiology, Antimicrobial agents and chemotherapy, Circulation, Clinical microbiology review, Clinical trials, Clinical infectious diseases, Diagnostic microbiology and infectious diseases, Diabetes, Hypertension, International journal of obesity, Journal of American medical association, Journal of clinical microbiology, Journal of hypertension, Journal of infectious diseases, Medical mycology, Microbiology and molecular biology review, National medical journal of India, Public health nutrition have been added (print + online access).

E-resources: Library provides access to e-resources consortium

Proquest ICMR has provided Proquest Medline Library (PML) database. This on-line database can be accessed for searching full text of 450 titles from biomedical journal. This database is accessible through ICMR Library network by user ID and Password.

Electronic Resources in Medicine (ERMED) Consortium is an initiative taken by Director General of Heath Services (DGHS) to develop nationwide electronic information resources in the field of medicine for delivering effective health care for all. The Consortium is being coordinated through ICMR headquarters set up at the National Medical Library (NML). In this consortium more than 5900 medical journals are accessible from 9 leading medical journal publishers, viz. American Academy of Pediatrics,BMJ Publishing, Cambridge University Press, IOS Press, Lippincott William Wilkins, Oxford University Press

A customized Journal Custom Content Consortia (JCCC) has been established among all the ICMR Institutes for better resource sharing. It covers 478 journals received collectively at 24 institutions/centres of ICMR. In addition to these, around 215 open access journals are also covered. In all, journals from 417 publishers are covered on a single platform. If a journal is not subscribed by NIE library and is available from other ICMR libraries, a user can send request for article through the consortia and the requested article is supplied by the concerned ICMR library.

J-Gate is an electronic gateway to global e-journal literature. J-Gate provides seamless access to millions of journal articles available online. It presently has a massive database of journal literature, indexed from 16548 e-journals with links to full text at publisher sites.

In addition, library has access to five core bio-medical journals (viz. Lancet, Nature, BMJ and NEJM ). This consortium are accessed within the institute using the authoticated IP address, these journals including back volumes. These journals are available on-line ahead of the print versions

Electronic Databases: Medline CD-ROM Medline database contains reference to research articles in over 3200 major medical journals from 1966. Topics covered are Microbiology, Delivery of health care, Epidemiology, Nutrition, Pharmacology and Environmental health.

We also utilize the networked information resources for providing recent and most comprehensive access to e-journals, e-books and e-reference resources to the faculty, scholars and staff under Intranet and Internet environments.

25 computers (Intelcore i5) and LED TV (42 inches) are added to the workstation with internet connection (NKN 200 mbs). NIE staff, project staff, scholars of MPH, HIV Epidemiology Training Programme (HETP), National and International trainees and visitors, Ph.D fellows, participants of short-term training course utilize the facility for accessing materials such as online-journals, E-books, pubmed etc for reference purpose. These computer facilities are also used for library orientation programme, and training programmes like scopus, ERMED. These facilities are also extended to trainer workshop hands-on-experience such as EpiInfo, Stata, SPSS.

Thesis: Copies of thesis done by staff and scholars are organized in a separate reference section.

Free trial for Science Direct and Scopus database

(i) Free trial for science direct database was set up for NIE by ICMR headquarters. Science Direct is a leading full-text scientific database offering journal articles and book chapters from more than 2,500 peer-reviewed journals and more than 11,000 books. The users had access to the full text articles from nearly 700 journals from the collection of science direct.

(ii) Free trial for Scopus database was set up for NIE by ICMR headquarters. Scopus aims to provide a platform that improves research a simple user interface. Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature and quality web sources with smart tools to track analyze and visualize research. Scopus database offers nearly 18000 titles from more than 5000 international publishers, including coverage of 16500 peer-reviewed journals.

Other facilities: Reading room, Optimizer (Shelving rack), computers,Audio visual zone, Discussion room, Internet, photocopy machine, DVD writer, colour printer, Colour Television (29 inches) and DVD to view educational video is setup at Audio visual zone, 5dx Canon two side scanner, barcoding system, Barcoed lazer scanner, Web camera, Snap Server (NAS 100) Network Attached Storage, Reprographic facilities, Locker facility, Laminating machine, Softwares - Acrobat reader, Acrobat Writer, WINZIP, ABBAY fine reader 8.0 professional ed are available in the library, printer facility available for the students, Air-conditioned reading and reference section, Wi-Fi environment, four Closed Circuit Television CCTV camera is available to monitor the entire library.
