Highly motivated individuals with good academic credentials and keen desire to pursue research in areas of Epidemiological, Biostatistical and Microbiological sciences are invited to apply for the PhD programme in Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Microbiology at the ICMR - National Institute of Epidemiology [ICMR-NIE] recognised by University of Madras (UNOM), Chennai. 

ICMR-NIE is one of the permanent institutes of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Department of Health Research (DHR) of Govt. of India. ICMR-NIE, based in Chennai is ICMR's flagship organization that focuses on training and research in microbiology, biostatistics & epidemiology and public health (www.nie.gov.in). The ICMR-NIE conducts/co-ordinates epidemiological studies in communicable, non-communicable diseases and health systems research. It has extensive collaborative partnerships with various national, international institutes and agencies. ICMR-NIE is a WHO collaborating centre for leprosy research and epidemiology. ICMR-NIE has the principal mandate to develop the sciences of epidemiology and support capacity building in this area under the auspices of ICMR School of Public Health. Our PhD in Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Microbiology programme enables you to undertake a research project that will improve understanding of epidemiology, biostatistics and microbiology. 

Age limit

While there is no upper age limit for consideration, admission will depend on the aptitude andability / capacity to undertake research and will be the criteria for selection.

Indian Nationals only are eligible to apply.

Fee Details

Fees to be paid at University of Madras (UNOM)

The following fees are payable by every research scholar admitted to the University of Madras:

Cultural and Youth Festival fee (other than sports, NSS, etc., [Entry only] Rs. 30/-
Fee for the Development of Infrastructure facilities in the University [Entry only] Rs. 30/-
Library fee [per annum] Rs. 120/-
Total Rs. 180/-

The above fees should be paid by means of Demand Draft drawn in favour of “THE REGISTRAR, UNIVERSITY OF MADRAS” / online payment (if option is provided by UNOM) separately for this purpose, without clubbing with other fee and the same should be sent to University of Madras, through the Head of Institution (ICMR-NIE). The above fee should be paid within one month from the date of joining at ICMR-NIE. The fee structure is subject to revision as decided by UNOM from time to time.

Selection Process

Screening of applications for eligibility

Applications will be screened for eligibility as per University guidelines. Eligible candidates will be called for personal discussion at ICMR-NIE.

Personal discussion at ICMR-NIE for candidat​es qualifying the eligibility criteria

While appearing for the personal discussion the candidates have to bring attested copies and originals of the relevant documents (Mark sheets and passing certificates of higher secondary examination i.e. 10 +2 onwards, proof of date of birth and JRF award certificate, if applicable). No TA/DA will be paid for attending the personal discussion. ICMR – NIE Academic Committee will also assess requirement for additional course work in research methods on a case-to-case basis.

Research proposal review by ICMR-NIE Academic Committee

Candidates short-listed after personal discussion should submit their PhD research proposal for review by ICMR-NIE Academic Committee

The decision of the ICMR-NIE Academic Committee / Director, ICMR-NIE will be final and no correspondence will be entertained in this regard. The decision the Director, ICMR-NIE to assign PhD guide/co-guide will be final. Canvassing in any form and/or bringing in any influence will mount to disqualification. Candidates should note that non-fulfillment of the eligibility criterion will result in cancellation of candidature at any stage of PhD programme.

Research proposal review by ICMR-NIE-Institutional Ethics Committee (Academic)

Research proposals approved by ICMR-NIE Academic Committee should be submitted for review and approval by ICMR-NIE-Institutional Ethics Committee (Academic).

Application for Eligibility Certificate at UNOM

Candidates should apply for the Eligibility Certificate to ​UNOM in stipulated time as per University guidelines. PhD registration is subject to approval of Eligibility Certificate by ​UNOM.

Provisional registration with UNOM

After obtaining Admission letter from UNOM and joining at ICMR-NIE, PhD Scholars should apply for provisional registration to UNOM in stipulated time as per University guidelines.
